General information
The Iliocostalis is one of the accessory muscles to inspiration as well as being part of the erector spinae muscles.
Literal meaning
The muscle between the ribs in the loin region.
Interesting information
The iliocostalis are made up of the iliocostalis cervicis and thoracis, which both form the anterior iliocostalis system, and the iliocostalis lumborum, which forms the lateral longissimus.
Origin
Superior margin of the angles of ribs 3 to 6 just medial to attachment of the iliocostalis thoracis.
Insertion
Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C4 to C6.
Function
Extension of the vertebral column; assist with lateral flexion of vertebral column; postural stabilization of vertebral column.
Nerve supply
Dorsal rami of cervical and thoracic spinal nerves (C4 to T6).
Blood supply
Muscular branches of the occipital artery from the external carotid artery. Dorsal branches of the posterior intercostal arteries from the thoracic aorta.
